Kelp Lines is a seasonal collaboration between Ocean Strategies, Washington Sea Grant and the Washington Seaweed Collaborative that serves up the latest on seaweed farming and restoration in Washington State.

Our curated content is categorized to help you zero in on the items most relevant to YOUR interests: Washington, Regional, National, Events, Resources, and Research. A few topics we delivered earlier this week:

  • WA Seaweed Aquaculture Economic Potential Analysis – Just dropped! Maritime Blue and Ocean Strategies assessment of the most promising pathways for our state’s seaweed industry. This excerpt from the fact sheet sums it up: “With targeted support, Washingtonʼs seaweed aquaculture industry could create significant economic benefits for the state, including jobs, revenue, and tax contributions, while enhancing coastal ecosystem health.

  • Indigenous resurgence in the Blue Economy: Relational values to guide kelp mariculture – Co-authored by Kwakiutl First Nation and Simon Fraser University researchers, this summary of their multi-year collaboration explains how Kwakiutl ancestral governance principles of maya’xala (respect), reciprocity, namwayut (we are one), and responsibility must guide kelp harvest and farming.

  • What the Tide Leaves Behind – A lovely rumination on beach wrack from Salish Magazine. The metaphysical among you may be interested in this assessment of washed-up seaweed as a substrate for mushroom cultivation.
